TROUBLE SHOOTER IN THE DARK

Press photo dated 27 July, 1958 with caption that reads: “Robert Murphy (L), deputy under secretary of state and President Eisenhower’s Middle East trouble shooter, sits in dim light with Lebanese President Camille Chamoun in the presidential residence in Beirut Thursday. With Lebanese rebels only a short distance away, the curtains were drawn in the room and the photographer was not allowed to use a flash for fear of drawing rebel fire. Murphy was sent to Lebanon soon after the U.S. Marines landed there.”
