Egypt Sand Skiing

Egypt Sand Skiing

Press photo dated 15 March 1939 with caption that reads: “SLUG (ARAB ON SKIIS) SKIING IN THE DESERT, Cairo, Egypt…… Demonstrating that snow is not essential to the sport of skiing, two Arabs are shown skimming over the desert sands near Cairo. Natives find that skiis keep them from sinking into the sand and speed up travel over short distances. Underside of the skiis are treated with a special preparation to make them slide easier over the sand.” Picture scanned from 18mm X 23mm original black and white silver gelatin print.
